THE CITY OF MAHE

The Seychelles archipelago comprises 115 exquisitely beautiful granite and coral Islands situated between 4 and 10 degrees South of the Equator. These tropical Islands are 1000 miles from the African continent, almost 2000 miles form India and 1400 miles from the Arabian Peninsula.

Mahe is the principal island of the Seychelles. It is 15 miles long (27 km) and 5 miles wide (8km). The capital, Port Victoria is one of the smallest capitals in the world. Plaslin, situated 24 miles north of Mahe is the second largest island. The population of Mahé is 80,000. The city Victoria accommodates 90% of the country's total population. In 1774 the island was named after Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais (1699-1753), a French governor of Mauritius.
