THE CITY OF DUBROVNIK

Dubrovnik is a port city in Dalmatia, a region in Croatia, the Adriatic Sea. The city has around 50,000 inhabitants (2001) and is the capital of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations on the Adriatic, a seaport and the centre of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. In 1979, the city centre of Dubrovnik was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities of the Adriatic coast and sometimes called the 'Pearl of the Adriatic Sea ". In front of the Blasius Church stands” Roland”, the patron of the city. Other important historical monuments are: the Franciscan Monastery (with a beautiful 14th century cloister), the still intact ancient pharmacy and the separate Doge Palace. The old port was already used when the Levantines arrived here in the 7th century l. The many red-tiled mansions and palaces date from the 17th century. Throughout the town are many fountains (Onofrio Fountain) that all get their water from mountain sources.  The cultural life received a lot of impulses through the presence of Lord Byron, the English romantic poet who lived and worked here a while, and by George Bernard Shaw who was a guest for several weeks in the house of a friend writer.
