Hamburg
THE CITY OF HAMBURG
Hamburg is the second city of Germany. The city is home to approximately 1.8 million people. The port of Hamburg is the second-largest port in Europe (after that of Rotterdam), and the ninth-largest in the world. Hamburg is a major transportation hub in northern Germany and became a media and industrial centre. Hamburg is not located directly on the sea but on the river Elbe.
Bremerhaven
THE CITY OF BREMERHAVEN
Bremerhaven is the seaport of the free city-state of Bremen, a federal state of Germany. Bremerhaven forms an enclave in the state of Lower Saxony and is located at the mouth of the River Weser on its eastern bank, opposite the town of Nordenham. The port lies on the banks of the River “Geest” at the sport where it enters the eastern Weser estuary about 70 kilometres from the North Sea in northern Germany.
Kiel
THE CITY OF KIEL
Kiel is a city district in northern Germany and the capital of the Bundesland Schleswig-Holstein. The city has 237.579 inhabitants. Due to its geographic location in the north of Germany, the southeast of the Jutland peninsula, and the south-western shore of the Baltic Sea, Kiel has become one of the main maritime centres of Germany.
During World War II, Kiel remained one of the major naval bases and shipbuilding centres of the German Reich. There was also slave labour for the local industry. Because of its status as a naval port and as production site for submarines, Kiel was heavily bombed by the Allies during World War II. Just like other heavily bombed German cities, the city was rebuilt after the war. In 1946, Kiel was named the seat of government for Schleswig-Holstein, and it officially became the state's capital in 1972
