DANIEL SUY - THE CITY OF BRIDGETOWN

Bridgetown is the capital and commercial centre of Barbados. The city has a population of about 80. 000 people.

When the British landed on the abandoned island, they found rude traces of  an old  bridge which had been constructed over the river (now known as the Careenage) by the original Arawak indian inhabitants. The European settlers initially called the place “Indian Bridge”. After the construction of a new bridge, the town became known as the " Town of St. Michael" in official documents, before finally being named Bridgetown.
