Papeete

THE CITY OF PAPEETE
Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia in the South Pacific Ocean and the most important 'urban centre'. It is the main transport hub of the islands and the best place to start exploring the archipelago
The city lies on the northwest coast of Tahiti and is one of the largest urban centres in the South Pacific. The island of Tahiti itself is dominated by mount Orohena and Aorai. Captain James Cook first anchored off its shores.
The urban area of Papeete had a total population of 131,695 inhabitants at the August 2007 census, 26,017 of who lived in the commune of Papeete proper.
