Buenos Aires

THE CITY OF BUENOS AIRES

Buenos Aires lies on the southern shore of the Río de la Plata, on the southeastern coast of the South American continent. It is the capital and largest city of Argentina. Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in Brazil are the largest cities in South America, and Buenos Aires takes the third place.

In 1580, Juan de Garay refounded Nuestra Senora Santa Maria del Buen Aire. In 1810 independence from Spain was declared. After 1850, capital from Britain and labor from Spain and Italy led the country to become one of the world’s largest agricultural exporters. Later immigrants from Eastern Europe and Germany arrived, which further changed the character of the city.
