THE CITY OF CALLAO

Callao is the largest and most important port in Peru. Callao is located west of Lima, the capital of Peru. The Lima Metropolitan Area is a large metropolis where more than 30 percent of Peru's population lives.

Callao is built on and around a peninsula of La Punta, a district that was once a wealthy residential neighbourhood. Callao is blessed by having very good natural harbours, which makes it quite unique along the Pacific coast of South America. The port is situated south of the Rímac River. Its anchorage is protected by the large offshore island of San Lorenzo where a submarine base and a naval station are posted.  Callao also several other islands besides San Lorenzo: El Fronton (a former high security prison), the Cavinzas, and the Palominos, where a large number of sea lions and sea birds live in a virtually untouched ecosystem.
