Sometimes called “The pearl of the Mediterranean”, Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC and soon reached a legendary status as a beacon of culture, The Pharos or lighthouse became the symbol of the city and was seen as one of the seven wonders of the Ancient World. Alexandria was the setting for the love affair between Cleopatra and Mark Anthony.
